The Vandals: 'Hitler Bad, Vandals Good'
1998 Nitro Records |
The Vandals are one of those crazy, American bands that have been around for years, but yet you never know what to expect from them. This time round there are some really excellent, fast, catchy songs with their trademark intelligent, dumb ass lyrics. 'I've Got An Ape Drape' and 'My Girlfriend's Dead' having some particularly hilarious lines. With such great song titles and wacky lyrics it's easy to overlook the fact that The Vandals effortlessly deliver some highly original music, sometimes with a style that no other punk band could ever get away with; the intro to 'I Know, Huh?' has a kind of 'oompa'/accordion style thing happening and 'F'd Up Girl' adopts a big band style arrangement. In contrast to this there's also a version of Pennywise's 'Come Out Fighting' that gets a 'Lust for Life' sounding adaptation proving that The Vandals can be seriously cool at times too, if not entirely serious. No, they're not like any other band and this is a good thing. |
