Q 99. erm this is gonna sound soooo stupid,bu im a townie who wants to turn punk but i hav no idea how 2 do it, i think the musics wicked but i dnt no which bands are the best to listen to or not, im kindda new at all this, so any help you can give me would be much appreciated, cheers mate

Name: Caz Location: oxford Age: 16 Sex: female Date: 21Jan2003

A 99. Well for starters, stop saying you're a townie! Say "I'm a punk". As for what bands are best to listen to, jeez there are so many bands and so many different sub types of 'punk' just now and everyone's got different taste anyway! What bands have you already heard and liked? Look for 'punk various' CDs with the bands you already like on them and you might like some of the others. Ask everyone else who they like and borrow their CDs! Buy Kerrang and see who's the coolest punk bands this week. Use the listening posts in HMV and Virgin, gawd I dunno, I just kinda got into it gradually many years ago. I don't remember 'turning' punk just realised that 'punk' was the only way to explain what the hell I was!

Q 98. who else is playing at the sum 41 concert in the cardiff arena soon?

Name: jade morgan Location: pontypridd Age: 15 Sex: female Date: 16Jan2003

A 98. Mighty Mighty Bosstones support at all UK dates.

Q 97. I was reading the questions from before and I saw that a girl asked about Brody Armstrong. I also think Brody is really cool and I noticed that in 2 different songs she sings about Gerti Rouge. My friend told me that was her real name is that true? Do you know of a website that has a biography of her?

Name: Court Location: LA Age: 15 Sex: Female Date: 11Jan2003

A 97. The Distillers.net site has a couple of FAQs about the band, one of them being about who Gerti Rouge is. According to them Gerti was Brody's childhood friend in Australia. Also the DistillaNation site has quite a few links to interviews/articles about the band so you could check out some of them, although I never saw an actual biography of Brody the interviews have some snippets of that type of information here and there.

Q 96. Are Meltdown playing at the Norwich Waterfront

Name: Kyla Location: Norfolk Age: 14 Sex: Female Date: 10Jan2003

A 96. There are a couple of events called 'Meltdown' on at the Waterfront, with local bands playing, not actually the band 'Meltdown'.

Q 95. zelda? why is it that people think im high when im sober and im sober when im high? and why is it that so many people want to visit new york? and do you have hot topic where you live? because i just got a really cool sweatshirt from the one in washington DC that has hello kitty on it and says i love punk....ps...i think hot topic is just commercialized individualism and prefer to MAKE my own shit, but it WAS a cool shirt... punk rawx...-kayt

Name: kayt / kid dynomite Location: hell Age: 26thousandeighthunnerdandfortyeighty...or...19 Sex: non-penis-model Date: 07Jan2003

A 95. Probably just because you're like, you know, bonkers!!

The New York thing, I don't really know, I guess because it's so huge and intense. And for me it's also the Ramones, the whole CBGBs thing, The Lunachicks, Bouncing Souls, stuff from films, "53rd and Third", "sitting here in Queens eating refried beans", loadsa stuff.

Not heard of Hot Topic myself, don't know if we have them over here, but I'm not big on shopping, I too like to make my own shit, but a cool shirt is a cool shirt, right! "commercialized individualism" that is so true for so many things nowadays, whatever happened to real individuality?

Q 94. how does gigs bring people together

Name: tim Location: norwich Age: 23 Sex: m Date: 07Jan2003

A 94. I suppose because everyone has something in common straight away and the music helps intensify the mood (and alcohol helps too!) but I don't think that all bands or indeed their fans can get that feeling right. I just depends, but when it does happen it's amazing, it's much more than just playing a good gig.

Q 93. is he going to ask me out soon & does he like me too.

Name: Nandita Pillay Location: colusa California Age: 15 Sex: female Date: 04Jan2003

A 93. I'll spare you my pathetic tales this time and get straight to the 'Orb'. The 'Orb' says...."Yes".

Q 92. Does the guy i like, like me too

Name: Nandita Pillay Location: colusa California Age: 15 Sex: female Date: 04Jan2003

A 92. Hell, I don't even know if the guy I like, likes me! How are you supposed to know? I mean, years ago I was friends with a guy for about three years before I realised that he liked me and that was only after he finally told me! Luckily though I liked him too by that time and it all worked out happily ever after, well for a while anyway, hahaha. And more recently I found out this other guy liked me when I was trying to set him and a friend up! That was weird and just a little awkward. I'm totally oblivious. Ahh well, enough of my problems, hahaha, back to the old 'Mystical Orb' again.
Nandita, the Orb says..."You can count on it".

Q 91. I'v just been given a part i this show as a punk. i was hoping that you could give me some tips on how to make the part more life like and so not to insult or offend the punk culture. your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Name: Bridggett Location: A.C.T Age: 15 Sex: female Date: 01Jan2003

A 91. Well I suppose it depends on whether the part was writen as a punk for the stereotypical reasons; aggressive, anti- social behaviour or whether they wanted someone who was an individual with their own ideas. I doubt very much if any punks would ever be insulted by a portrayal of a punk as on the whole we're a pretty accepting, thick skinned bunch that also possess a sense of humour! I think that most punks tend to be strong-willed, the type of people that will stand up for what they believe in no matter how many people are against them and basically not be forced to do anything or live their lives in any way which they do not agree with. But some are spineless, followers of fashion too. I think the one thing that all punks have in common is the love of their music, whatever sub genre it may be, so always listening to music, wearing bands t-shirts etc. Apart from that I don't really know, we're all still individuals with our own feelings, ideas, attitudes and opinions.

Q 90. I often wear black lipstick, but the problem is it comes off too easily. Could you recommend a long-lasting brand or give me some tips?

Name: Fiona Location: London Age: 15 Sex: Female Date: 29Dec2002

A 90. Yeah, I hear ya. Well the one I have just now is shade 37, Lip Paint by Barry M, available from all good alternative shops and now also available in 'Super Drug' stores I believe. I don't think the brand really makes much difference though, although the Barry M one can't have been too expensive or, let's face it, a cheapskate like me wouldn't have it!
Some tips on applying it are:
1. Outline the lips with a black lip pencil if you have one, DON'T use eyeliner! if you don't start with step 2.
2. Use a lip brush to apply an even coat
3. Blot with a tissue to remove any excess, open your mouth wide so your lips are flat, don't pout- you'll end up with lines
4. Apply a light dusting of pressed face powder, any shade will do as it should be fine enough not to alter the colour
5. Drink with a straw and don't eat or snog anyone or you'll have to re-apply it!

After step 4 you can also apply a lip sealer which helps it all stay put. You can usually find it near the lipsticks in good chemists, one I know is called 'Lipcote' and it looks like a bottle of clearish nail varnish. But it stings a wee bit when you apply it and of course, extreme lip action will still mess it up! But it works quite well.

A 88.

Do you mean a jumper like this?! On this totally random person whom I've never seen before in my life, hahaha.

I have no idea. Although going by the number of red/black stripy tops I saw during December in Glasgow I'd say check out your local alternative shop 'cause they must be selling them.
