Having stayed up all of the previous night finishing work for uni, I was a bit worried that with my adrenalin buzz over I might find a quiet corner and fall asleep. But there's no fear of that as Sleazy's is packed and Barfeoot is one of those lively bands that have you won over by the middle of the first song. There is a slight variation in their songs and just when you think they've gone all soft and are playing a slow one, there's a big guitar riff and a crash of drums and they're off again, just like it should be. The Day I Snapped introduce their new bassist T-Bone before playing the excellent 'I Could Try But What's The Point?'. They continue through a few more songs between chants of "T-Bone!", which seems to be going down really well with the new guy who's playing up to every minute of his adoration. The rest of the band seem much more relaxed this time round too with Richie jumping and singing along as Alan looks on bemused by the on stage transformation of his new bassist. I'm not sure if it's the better sound quality in Sleazy's or the addition of a more funky bass style from the shy, retiring bassist but the overall sound is much better than when they supported Gameface. There's also plenty guitar noise and big drum rolls, especially on 'Unwound', my favourite from their recent (& free!) CD and on 'Glass Eye', which may well be my new favourite. 'Where Do We Go From Here?'- A very good question indeed. Now this could well have been a very sad occasion, as the cheeky yet adorable Beauty School Dropout play their last ever show, but from the very start it is obvious that this is not going to be the case. Richie, Dave and Brad take to the stage whilst drummer, Andy, decides he'll video them. After Dave points out that videoing and playing drums at the same time is probably not going to work Andy disappears, giving them time to realise that Brad is not suitably attired, with a severe lack of a Hawaiian shirt. Not being able to find his, he has to borrow one from a girl in the crowd. Finally Andy arrives back and they launch into 'Schizo Girl'. Their music is in complete contrast to their laid back, clowning around attitude between songs; fast, catchy, sing-a-long songs of messed up love but with enough of a punky edge as to make them cool. They blast through most of the songs from 'Teasing the Fat Kids', a few songs that should've been on their second album, a couple of choice covers and they've even got a few guest vocalists. Alan 'Snapped joins them onstage in his Hawaiian shirt to sing 'Just 17' and his band mate, Craig, gets the opportunity to come out from behind the drums to sing 'Safety Net'. Some guy called Davie Dunn (who you were all shouting for at the time) gives us his rendition of what I think is an old Lemonheads song, he may not be a star, but as karaoke goes it's pretty damn good. Andy appears at the front of the stage and it looks as if he may have a few sentimental words to say before their set is over. He leans into the microphone and says, "Chris, could ye bring us a pint?" It's beers all round, followed by more classic pop-punk tunes and there seems to be some confusion as to what's actually the end of the set. By this time the crowd's dancing around like mad and there's even some stage diving. They play the old favourite 'A New England', dedicate the next song, 'Blitzkrieg Bop' to some of their friends and of course to Joey Ramone and invite everyone on stage to join in, which they do much to the amusement of the band. Surely that's the end then? No, there's more, keeping with the Christmas spirit it's a surreal but speedy rendition of 'Feed The World', which finishes with Brad smashing up his bass. Now that's an ending. |
